STROKE SCALES

Different scales are essential in the acute and subacute phase of stroke to assess deficits caused by a stroke.

Both the Canadian scale NIHSS scale are useful in the acute phase of stroke to assess focal involvement of different parts and systems (engine, visual sensory, language). The need to assess exactly the 15 items of the NIH and the need for a thorough neurological examination makes this scale is limited to physicians, while Canada is easier nurse care application, but also need training to check it.

Glasgow scale (GCS) allows mainly neurologically assess level of consciousness, is used by physicians, paramedical and nurse stroke team. It is used both stroke unit or neurocritical/intensive care.
